NPI lookup

Find a US healthcare provider's NPI number, or check who an NPI belongs to. Search by number, provider name or organisation, using the official CMS NPI Registry.

About NPI numbers

Every healthcare provider that bills US health insurance has a 10-digit National Provider Identifier. Type 1 NPIs belong to individual practitioners; type 2 NPIs belong to organisations such as clinics, hospitals and pharmacies. The number is permanent and is listed in the public NPI Registry, run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The 10th digit is a check digit. Before searching, this tool checks it using the official formula (Luhn, with the prefix 80840), so a mistyped number is caught straight away.

Questions

What is an NPI number?

A National Provider Identifier is the unique 10-digit number every US healthcare provider uses for billing and insurance. Individuals (doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists) and organisations (clinics, hospitals, pharmacies) each have one, and it never changes.

How do I find a provider's NPI by name?

Choose "Provider name", enter the last name (and first name if you know it), and pick a state to narrow the results. For a clinic, hospital or pharmacy, choose "Organisation" instead.

Is this NPI lookup free?

Yes. The details come straight from the official NPI Registry run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which is public information updated daily.

Why can't I find an NPI number?

The number may have been mistyped, never issued, or deactivated. The NPI Registry does not show deactivated numbers, so a deactivated NPI looks the same as one that was never issued. This tool checks the number's check digit first, which catches most typing mistakes.

What does the last digit of an NPI mean?

It is a check digit, worked out from the other nine digits using the Luhn formula with the prefix 80840. If any one digit is mistyped, the check digit no longer matches.

Can I look up an organisation's NPI?

Yes. Choose "Organisation" and enter its name. Results show the organisation, its specialty and its practice address.
