Questions
How do I calculate cubic yards?
Multiply length by width by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. A 10 x 10 foot area 3 inches deep is 10 x 10 x 0.25 = 25 cubic feet, or 0.93 cubic yards.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27. A cubic yard is 3 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep, and 3 x 3 x 3 = 27.
How many square feet does a cubic yard cover?
It depends on the depth: 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 at 3 inches, 81 at 4 inches and 54 at 6 inches.
How do I convert inches of depth to feet?
Divide by 12. 3 inches is 0.25 feet and 4 inches is 0.333 feet. This calculator lets you enter each measurement in its own unit, so you don't need to convert.
How much does a cubic yard weigh?
It depends on the material: roughly 1.35 tons for gravel or sand, about 2 tons for concrete, and much less for mulch or topsoil. Use our concrete and gravel calculators for bags and tons.
Should I order extra?
Adding 5–10% covers settling, compaction and uneven ground. Suppliers usually sell in half or whole cubic yards, so round up.
